Environmental issues directly affect our daily lives as well as our economic livelihood. Nowhere is this more true than on Matagorda and San Antonio Bays on the Texas coast.
Years of commitment and hard work on the part of a group of local environmental activists resulted in the largest lawsuit settlement in history under the Clean Water Act. From that settlement came the formation of the Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust whose mission and purpose is to support and fund environmental mitigation projects, studies, and initiatives in the Matagorda Bay and San Antonio Bay ecosystems.
MBMT’s unique mission to support environmental restoration and research is designed to promote the health of not just the bay ecosystems, but the coastal community as a whole. By recognizing this moral obligation, we hope to promote a healthy community from a healthy natural environment.
The projects that MBMT is undertaking are reflective of a commitment to recognizing the impact of the environment on the heritage, culture, and economy of our community. They are designed to address not just economic impact, but they also take into account increasing opportunities for accessing nature through the promotion of recreation and tourism activities.
